Literacy and Numeracy

In Archbishop McGrath, we believe strong Literacy and Numeracy skills play a fundamental role in preparing pupils for a successful life within and beyond secondary education. As a result, pupils have the opportunity to apply and develop their Literacy and Numeracy skills across the curriculum to ensure they value and prioritise these skills within school and beyond. We are continually striving to raise standards of Literacy and Numeracy by challenging, supporting and equipping pupils to become resilient, independent and reflective learners.

We use Welsh Assembly Government Personalised Assessments as well as STAR Reader and STAR Maths to track pupil progress. Pupils take the Welsh Government Assessments in the summer term, under examination conditions. The STAR assessments are completed in class with year 7 and 8, four times throughout the year; these assessments inform the pupils who will receive intervention. There are three intervention cycles within the school year and these session are delivered by members of the English department, Maths department and Progress Centre. Parents are informed following STAR assessments if their child is identified as requiring intervention.

The intervention Cycles for 2023/24 will be as follows:

Intervention cycle One - 18th Sept - 15th Dec (STAR Test end of December)

Intervention Cycle Two - 8th Jan - 15th March  (STAR Test end of March)

Intervention Cycle Three - 8th April - 12th July  (STAR Test in July)

Additionally WAG personalised assessments are in the School Calendar for February 2024

Pupils have access to a variety of resources to support their development in both Literacy and Numeracy, which they access during their English and Maths Lessons.
